In October 2015, Google announced Project Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP). Brightcove quickly provided a component for its video player to support the shared goal of delivering blazing-fast mobile experiences.

This week, Google’s mobile search results saw the first visits to AMP-compatible publisher landing pages that have optimized their sites for the AMP specification. Below are two searches I ran on my phone that generated results like this – and coincidentally, they involved key Brightcove clients such as Time Inc., The Atlantic, Gannett, Vox and Forbes.

AMP optimizes the way page elements load to provide the best viewing experience possible. The Brightcove AMP component is an alternate player embed code that we provide for use on AMP HTML pages if customers want to support the initiative. We have provided the AMP HTML component to ensure that the player is compatible with the AMP specification and that any page using it will be recognized by Google as AMP compatible.

“A central goal of the AMP project was to make mobile web experience blazing fast while preserving the amazing diversity of tools that the open web has to offer,” said David Besbris, VP of Engineering at Google. “It has been great to see the expertise that Brightcove has brought to the AMP open source project.”

As of this writing, AMP is set to launch worldwide this week, except in Australia, where it is scheduled to debut at the end of March.

One of our EMEA customers that has already adopted AMP and the Brightcove player is La Stampa. Here is an example (https://www.lastampa.it/vercelli/2016/02/23/news/carcoforo-il-paese-con-47-abitanti-che- sopravvive-grazie-a-facebook-1.36568827/amp/) for an AMP-compatible page with video (the important thing is to view the page on a smartphone via HTTPS). Giuseppe Covato, Director of Technology Innovation and Development at La Stampa, said: “We know our users appreciate experiences that look great and load quickly on mobile, so we were excited to join Google’s AMP initiative. Brightcove’s development of an AMP component for the video player we use ensures that our video pages are also fast and AMP compatible.”
