YouTube has revealed that over 1.5 billion people are watching YouTube Shorts every month. YouTube Shorts, which was launched in 2020, is the company’s answer to TikTok. According to a press release, the growing popularity of the new feature has caused a rise in multiformat creators.
In 2021, YouTube reportedly launched a $100 million Shorts fund. This fund paid creators up to $10,000 a month when they create popular Shorts content. "We are experiencing a slight headwind to revenue growth as Shorts viewership grows as a percentage of total YouTube time", Ruth Porat, Alphabet CFO. YouTube is currently testing monetization options as the fund was only a short-term way for creators to monetize Shorts. Porat revealed that “early advertise feedback and results are encouraging”.
