Conquering Clicks with the Perfect Thumbnail

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but the right thumbnail can be worth a thousand (or more) clicks. According to our partner, Neon, viewers are more likely to click play on a video if the thumbnail contains certain qualities, like instability (shown in A), incompleteness (shown in C) and luminance (shown in E). This finding comes from research and computational models of how the brain responds to video that form the basis for Neon’s thumbnail recommendation platform, used by publishers to automatically find, publish, and optimize images in on-demand and live video. What’s especially exciting is that Brightcove publishers using Neon for Video have seen a whopping 15-30% uplift in video views. As Neon’s CEO, Sophie Lebrecht, explained to us at NAB, “Having the right thumbnail to represent your content is really important in terms of driving traffic, driving click-through, building engagement…” and increasing ad revenue.
