ABS-CBN Relies on Brightcove Video Cloud for Live and VOD Streaming

ABS-CBN is a premier broadcaster in the Philippines, and the country's oldest commercial television network. In addition to its traditional broadcasting efforts, ABS-CBN has made a significant investment in its digital TV offerings. The network offers premium entertainment content videos, news and self-produced short films and TV series via live and video on-demand (VOD) streaming, the mobile Web and a ABS-CBN mobile app.

Since 2011, ABS-CBN has relied upon Brightcove Video Cloud--and related authentication and geo-restriction functionality--for its online video initiatives tied to the following platforms:

  • network's primary website featuring VOD access to local TV shows along with video clips of show highlights
  • iWant TV- this is a premium VOD and live streaming platform--available only to subscribers in the Philippines--that features a variety of programs from ABS-CBN, its Studio 23 sports channel and SKYcable
  • ABS-CBN News-this encompasses the network's local and international news and current affairs channels; news content is featured not only on the network's website but also distributed through Video Cloud's social sharing features to Facebook and Twitter

Recently, given the tragic events of Typhoon Haiyan and the devastation that the Philippines has experienced, ABS-CBN has taken advantage of call-to-action integration within Video Cloud to drive fundraising efforts for the region. As part of the "Tulong Na, Tabang na, Tayo na! An All-Star Benefit Concert," Tony-award winner Lea Salonga performed "Bayan Ko" ("My Country"). When viewers access the content on-demand (through ABS-CBN's website, social properties and elsewhere), they can donate to typhoon relief directly within the video.

We applaud ABS-CBN for its fundraising efforts, and the network's reliance on innovative calls-to-action to drive further donations to support people in need throughout the Philippines. Additional contributions are being accepted here.
