Employee Spotlight: Asia Reid

Asia Reid, Express Sales Consultant and lover of all things French, tells us what it is like to work at Brightcove in Express Sales.  Asia has been a key member of our Express Sales team and gets to talk with prospective customers everyday and explain to them how video can greatly enhance their overall business.

Where are you from and where did you attend school? I grew up in Cincinnati, OH, and went to school at Boston College, where I majored in English and French.

How did you end up in Boston? I came out here at age 18 to attend Boston College and have not been able to tear myself away from this city yet! Although I consider myself a Midwesterner, I have come to love Boston and consider it home.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work? My favorite time out of work is spent reading and relaxing at my Southie apartment, going out to dinner in the city with friends, and planning as many vacations as possible! I love to travel, cook, try new kinds of wine, go running, and spend as much time with my family and friends as I can. Since I spent my junior year abroad in Strasbourg, France, I also love anything French, which includes the wine, the cheese, and trips there.

What is one thing you couldn't live with out? I could never live without my phone. Living across the country from my family and scattered apart from many old friends, my phone is my connection to the rest of the world (and the tool that enables my favorite activity - long chats with my sister!).

What is your favorite restaurant or bar in Cambridge/Boston?  Why? My favorite restaurant in Boston is Tasca, for their delicious tapas and best sangria ever. There's no better place to camp out for the evening. However, when my parents come to visit, my answer would probably change to Top of the Hub... :) If you've never been, it's on the top floor of the Prudential Center, and you must go, just for the view of Boston!

When did you join Brightcove? I joined Brightcove in January 2011, just after the new year.

Why did you join Brightcove? I sort of stumbled upon Brightcove by accident, while I was feeling stuck in my old job. Though I knew nothing about the software industry to start with, it wound up being a happy discovery, as I quickly realized that this is a pretty special company to be a part of.

What do you work on at Brightcove? I'm in Express Sales, so I work on bringing new small-medium businesses on board as customers.

Tell me about a day in the life of you? I spend most of the day on the phones, talking with prospects and helping them test out the Brightcove product. My day is comprised of a lot of discussion about what our services can do, and how Brightcove can leverage our prospects' online video projects. Our team is very collaborative, so we also do a lot of peer review - listening in on each other's calls, role playing, and figuring out how to improve our selling together. 

What is your favorite memory or experience at Brightcove? My favorite experiences at Brightcove have all revolved around working with new businesses just starting out. In Express Sales, our approach is very consultative, and we have the opportunity to provide a service to up-and-coming companies who need our help getting their websites off the ground. Soon after starting here, I began working with a retired attorney who was starting a new online learning business and ended up revolving his entire model around Brightcove-powered video. Over the course of several months, I worked with him to get this project up and running, and playing a part in the process was unbelievably rewarding. 

Tell me about the culture at Brightcove. The culture here is very fast-paced and exciting, with a definite focus on delivering high-quality results. But at the same time, it's not a stressful place to work - everyone is supportive, and work-life balance is encouraged, if not demanded.

What is the most important thing you have learned in the last five years? None of the big picture accomplishments matter if you don't enjoy your day-to-day life. I've learned that, while planning for the future is important, life is more about the journey than the destination, so you have to work at making sure you enjoy each day.

What type of person should work at Brightcove? Someone who is intelligent, self-motivated, and productive, but who works well on a team. Lots of energy is a must, and so is a desire to constantly improve yourself and the people you work with. Feeling comfortable with the status quo is definitely not an option!

What keeps you coming back to Brightcove each day? The common goal is what keeps me coming back. This is a company where everyone is smart, innovative, and productive - we all work as a team to achieve the shared goal of making Brightcove successful, and we're all excited to be in it together. Being a part of such a high-caliber team makes me want to contribute something special, and motivates me to come in every day and do well.
