It has been an exciting year for Brightcove in Japan. Since the formation of our majority-owned subsidiary in 2008 and the introduction of a fully localized Brightcove Studio, media businesses and marketers across Japan have embraced Brightcove as the solution of choice for online video publishing, distribution and monetization.
Today, we are very happy to announce that Rakuten has chosen the Brightcove for online video initiatives. Rakuten is the largest e-commerce operator in Japan with more than 50 million users and among the top 10 largest Internet companies in the world. Rakuten is rolling out Brightcove-powered video capabilities for merchants using Rakuten Ichiba to sell products and services. Merchants are now able to upload and publish promotional videos through their Rakuten Ichiba storefronts. Also today, we are announcing six major new customers in Japan, including Tokyo Metropolitan Television Broadcasting Corp., Television Osaka, Inc., Shizuoka Asahi Television Co., Ltd., ART iT Co., Ltd., Chubu-Nippon Broadcasting Co., Ltd., and Aniplex Inc. (Read full press release).
The customers announced today come on the heels of online video initiatives rolled out earlier this year by a wide-range of media businesses and marketers in Japan taking advantage of the fully-localized Brightcove online video platforms. These customers include PRESENTCAST, Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS), Asahi Breweries Group, Sony Music Network Japan, Shueisha webUOMO, and orangepage net.
Brightcove established its majority-owned subsidiary, Brightcove KK, in Japan in 2008 with $4.9 million in new investment from Brightcove Inc. and four market-leading Japanese strategic partners: Dentsu, Inc., J-Stream, Inc., transcosmos, Inc. (transcosmos), and cyber communications inc. (cci). Brightcove KK is a fully staffed Tokyo-based operation that includes a leadership team and sales, marketing, engineering and customer support staff.
